Salmonella scares seems to be are becoming very common. And its definitely scaring the shit out of me. Most recently was the shocker that peanut products manufactured by Peanut Corporation of America, were the source of Salmonella-contaminated products that sickened almost seven hundred people and caused the deaths of nine.
Now, I know that I don't have to remind you of how the current agribusiness model, which is dominated by financial interest, profits and greed, has led to the unsanitary conditions to which has created the breading ground for Salmonella and other deadly foodborne pathogens (I save that soapbox for another day). But I will suggest to you that there is something we can do about it.
As consumers (and yes, human beings), we have choices and we must learn to exercise them. No, I will not preach a sermon about buying organic or reducing your carbon footstep by not eating meat or some other pretentious junk like that. No, I'm more soft-handed. Plus I understand that the above mention is not always realistic or afforable for those of us living on a budget. So here's a video about making your own peanut butter.
I hope it inspires you to come up with your own ways to exercise better, more concienceous choices.
Enjoy
